In Waddlo, every duck is only ever stuck because of another duck. Once you see the pond as a set of “you first” relationships, the puzzle stops being a tangle and becomes a queue. Here is how to read it.
Start with the free ducks
A duck whose line of sight to the edge is empty can leave at any time. Those are the beginning of your queue. Sending them first usually opens lines for others, so it is rarely a mistake.
Follow the blockers
For each duck that is not free, find the duck in its way. That is its blocker, and the blocker has to leave first. Write the chain in your head: “this duck waits for that duck, which waits for the next one.” When you reach a duck that is free, you have found the front of the queue.
Look for the one that unlocks the most
If two ducks are free, ask which one opens a line for more others. Sending the one that unblocks several ducks usually leaves you with more choices afterwards.
Treat a bump as information
Tapping the wrong duck costs an error, but it also tells you something: you now know exactly which duck is in its way. If you want to explore safely, Zen mode has no errors, and Undo gives you a way back.
Use hints to learn, not to skip
Each level has 3 hints. After a hint, ask yourself why that duck was first. The reason is nearly always one of the patterns above, and next time you will see it yourself.
A three-duck example
Picture a small pond with three ducks. The first duck looks towards an empty edge, so it is free. The second duck looks towards the first one, so it must wait. The third duck looks towards the second one, so it waits for both. The only possible order is first, second, third. Written as a chain, “third waits for second, second waits for first”, the answer is just the chain read backwards. Real levels have more ducks, but the method is identical: draw the chain in your head and read it from the end.
When it seems stuck
- Re-trace each duck’s line one cell at a time. The blocker is often a duck further along the line than you first noticed.
- Look for a duck you have not considered yet. The free duck may be sitting in a corner.
- Use Undo freely. Going back a move costs nothing and often reveals a better order.
- Take a hint, and when it points at a duck, ask what that duck was blocking.
New kinds of ducks
Later levels introduce ice ducks, portals, rotating ducks and ducks tied together in pairs. Each new kind arrives in a gentle level first. A good habit is to spend that first level just watching: tap, observe what the new duck does differently, and only then start planning. Treat every new kind of duck as one extra rule to add to your chain, not as a reason to panic.
Planning in zen mode
Zen mode has no errors and no timer, which makes it the perfect place to practise planning. Try to trace the entire solution before you tap anything. If you can name the order of every duck in advance, you have really understood the level.
